September 30 - October 1 Graffiti Removal Summary
Approximately 25 individuals participated in the effort over the course of the weekend, including a scout troop led by EIG members Joe Carter, Brian Leavell, Elza Marvin, and others.
Anmar Mirza and Jess Deli set up some scaffolding in the Signature Room on Friday night, much to the delight of Dave Everton. Picking up of blast media in the first sit-up room a few hundred feet into the crawl was pretty much finished off. Graffiti removal continued in one of the larger 'standup rooms' in the crawlway further toward the T. One crew continued to work in the immediate area of the T, and the third crew worked in the Signature Room (which will soon start to be called the L.V. Cushing Room), although they didn't use the scaffolding. Patti Cummings once again provided breakfast and lunch, as well as snacks throughout the day. The evening meal was a very extra-special treat this time, provided by Joe and Sharon Carter from Michigan, who brought a scout troop down to assist in the day's activities.
As usual and intended, Sunday was a lighter work day, and since only one person beside the surface support person (Patti) showed up, equipment and gear was stowed for the next work weekend.
Conclusion
There's a sense of accomplishment in seeing the results of graffiti removal in the Signature Room, even though efforts have pretty much just begun in that room proper. It is encouraging to get a glimpse and vision of what the entire room will look like without graffiti. We are nearing the point where we'll have two teams in that area, and it is expected to start really seeing a big difference, which Dave believes will be a big step for the entire project.
Thanks to each and every volunteer for their time and effort! Each person's hours are being tracked, and will count toward fulfilling the requirements for the various membership levels within the Richard Blenz Nature Conservancy.
